In logistics or production processes, items in boxes (RTI) and the containers themselves often need to be identified during transportation. This is often done using RFID tags, as they can be read without visual contact and in bulk. This can be challenging as reflections from metallic objects can lead to overshoots or dead zones in reading. Conveyor belts in close proximity can also cause problems because with UHF RFID technology tags can be read easily on other conveyor lines. The selection of suitable components for the construction of a tunnel can also be challenging.

Solution

Tunnels with integrated UHF RFID technology can be used to read tags and transport boxes. The metallic housing shields the RFID waves from the outside and thus prevents the reading of tags outside the tunnel. The housing also maximizes read reliability within the tunnel by using multiple antennas on all axes of the tunnel. The configuration and coordination of this kind of system, consisting of several antennas, an RFID reader and an interface for connecting to ERP or MES systems, is nevertheless quite complex. Turck therefore offers a complete package for RFID tunnels. Besides the necessary technology such as readers and antennas, the complete RFID tunnel package also includes the mechanical components for setting up the tunnel and the software interface.
